What Questions Will the 2020 Census Form Ask?

Each time the census is conducted, U.S. Census Bureau goes beyond simply counting the population to gather important demographic facts about residents at each address, such as their age, sex, race and ethnicity.

The 2020 questionnaire will ask if the head of household rents or owns the home, has a mortgage or owns the home mortgage-free.

This is a sample of the paper questionnaire that will be used during the 2020 census. This version excludes some information that will be included in actual mailings, such as the URL for online response and the contact information for phone response.

Couples living together will be asked to define their relationships to their partners as “same-sex” or “opposite-sex” husband/wife, spouse or unmarried partner.

The questionnaire will also ask for the name and phone number of the person completing the survey. This will allow a census worker to call to collect more information or ask for clarification if the responses are incomplete.
